Reading Response #3

Defend or critique the argument presented in the reading and demonstrate how changes to copyright law could benefit or harm your creative endeavours. Provide relevant evidence. (Pappalardo, K., & Bansal, K. (2018, February 9). How copyright law is holding back Australian creators. The Conversation. The Conversation.)

Nowadays it is a struggle to find a project that is 100% original, that gets an audience thinking “I’ve never seen anything like that before.” This is largely because new creations could be identified as an expansion of old creations. There are many examples of this as many creators take inspiration from other creators or projects, one of them would be George Lucas and Star Wars, Star Wars has a cult following that are very passionate about the films and overall canon and have their own theories about how they believe things should turn out and out of this they create their own passion projects. One of these people is a YouTuber known as Star Wars Theory, he created a fan film in agreement with Lucasfilm that said he had the right to use characters but it would not be Canon and he would have to pay for it all and would not be allowed to make any revenue from it, even after that agreement Disney stepped in and claimed the video for using some music that sounded slightly like the Imperial March which meant that they would make money off of the short film that he made.

This is in America and Canada where the laws are a lot more forgiving on copyright, so imagine what it would be like for Australian creators.

Copyright laws reduce the potential for Australian creators as they must get permission in order to use the slightest bit of another person’s product, song, creation etc. The article states that this is a negative thing as it is very expensive for new creators and could potentially put off products for large amounts of time if they don’t get permission right away which could cause creators to lose interest in their idea as they get fed up with the system. As I said before many creations are expanding on previous creations, this could be said for anything:

  • Music: remixes, same beat with different lyrics – example: Bob Dylan accused of plagiarism for his music from old folk music
  • Film: many films follow similar plot lines with different characters, titles but very similar ideas – example: Star Wars and Star Trek
  • Books: writing fan fiction – example: 50 Shades of Grey was a Twilight fan fiction

If people were too look at every creation made it would be hard to find something that wasn’t copyrighted, because everyone has an inspiration that comes from somewhere for their creativity. Original ideas are extremely difficult to come across nowadays, Kirby Ferguson states that ‘our most celebrated creators borrow, steal and transform’ from previous ideas (Ferguson, K. 2012) and that’s why it is more about the stylistic approach or individuality a creator puts onto an existing idea that makes them creative. Examples could be how Disney is recreating cartoon movies into live action because they are running out of ideas and are interpreting old ideas in a new media.

Overall Australia’s copyright laws are diminishing the ability for people to create due to time consumption, cost, and loss of passion which is why they are in dire need of change.

Previous Work Examples

A previous work example that I can look at is my work throughout High School Technical Graphics from years 9 – 12 which had a large focus on creative designs for houses and engineering projects. One of the main things I had to do was create displays to outline the many different areas of the product using Photoshop and Corel Draw. I believe that I can effectively use the knowledge I gained whilst creating these in my Final Projects creation in designing a visual aid using photoshop.

My work in Tech Graphics included the use of programs like the CorelDraw Graphics Suite, Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, TurboFloorPLAN and Photoshop

I also did a year long study of graphic design whilst at High School which outlined the basic techniques used when designing something, the effective use of colour, lighting, consistency, contrast were all discussed and were put to use with the work created. All these techniques are effective for my future work in design.

During my time studying Graphic Design at High school I had to design Magazine Covers, DVD and Video game covers as well as new logos. If you couldn’t tell I really liked video games.

Last year I studied architecture and had to learn all about design processes and determining effective design from ineffective design through the use of the 5 Step Design Process which can be applied directly to any creative design profession.

CREATIVITY AND TECHNOLOGY

Discuss what areas in the article relate to your field of study/future employment and what applications of AR can you envision would be of benefit to you professionally or otherwise in the future? Is there a different contemporary technology that you believe is more relevant to your field? How so? (Downey, S. (2016, October 25). The Gigantic List of Augmented Reality Use Cases. Retrieved from http://uploadvr.com/)

____________________________________________________________

As shown in the article The Gigantic List of Augmented Reality Cases (Downey, S. 2016) many different areas of study or work could potentially be heavily impacted by the use of AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality). One of those areas is design, or more specifically graphic design, I am currently studying graphic design and VR and AR could provide massive advantages to this profession in the future.

One of the advantages would be that a lot of design work would be able to be created in a virtual world allowing for a closed off and private working space which will “reduce reliance on display devices like TVs, computers, phones, and laptops.” (Downey, S. 2016). This would allow for larger scale designing as well as potentially more efficient working as it is a private working space where you wouldn’t have to worry about the people surrounding you.

Another advantage would be the ability to become a sort of freelancing graphic designer with the use of AR. This is because it AR would allow for design on the fly and then to also practice potential locations for your design as “AR adds digital elements on top of the real world.” (Downey, S. 2016) by giving people the ability to “view 3D models in a physical space” in “new and interactive ways.” (Downey, S. 2016). This would allow for a larger audience to view a design digitally and gain feedback on people’s opinion of the design by recording statements, analysing expressions and body language which would allow for details on whether to move on with the design or not. Same can be done for building plans and construction of large areas. The only negative for this is that it would require AR to be accessible to almost everyone to be effective.

Another potential advantage would be AR and VR helping on the psychological side of design. This would allow for designers to rehearse pitch meetings in front of a virtual crowd allowing them to become more fluid and confident in the design they are trying to display. It could also allow for physical communication over long distances, for instance if both the designer and client have AR are on different sides of the world, they could still physically see the person displaying the design through AR technology providing easy pitches or meetings without the difficulty of travel.

Many programs nowadays are very effective for Graphic Design nowadays, such as Photoshop which allows image editing at an easy and efficient work rate, but through the use of AR graphic design could be elevated due to the easy access on the fly and the ability to display your work practically anywhere as long as people have access to AR technology.

Project Proposal

For my final project for Creativity: Theory, Practice and History I plan to create a series of posters as it relates to the area I am majoring in in graphic design. I will use the space to outline the importance of creativity and the many stages of it that would have been learned throughout the course. I aim for it to be centred towards new students and give them a small introduction to the unit as well as to create an interesting perspective on what they are to be aiming to accomplish in the unit, sort of as an advertisement or selling point to get people interested in the unit. I will aim to create 4 or 5 different posters, each outlining different aspects of creativity or displaying how creators reel people in with their work such as Christopher Nolan (responsible for the Dark Knight Trilogy and Inception), Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction, Django: Unchained) or Stan Lee (Heavily Influential Marvel Comics Writers) who most people know and give them a viewpoint on how their creativity has changed peoples perspectives.

The Creative Personality

Name an individual (historical or contemporary) who you consider to be extremely creative. What about them or what they do led you to this decision? (Csikszentmihalyi, M. (1996, Jul). The creative personality. Psychology Today, 29, 36 – 40.)

____________________________________________________________

I believe that Christopher Nolan is one of the most intriguing creative individuals alive today. Nolan is a famous movie director responsible for big budget movies that are both very entertaining but also thought provoking and original. Some of these movies include Interstellar (Goldberg, J, Thorne, K, Tull, T. 2014) Inception (Tull, T. 2010), The Dark Knight Trilogy (Batman) and Memento (Ryder, A, Ball, C, Tyrer, W. 2000). Inception and Memento are two of my favourite movies and are a large part as to why I chose Christopher Nolan.

What makes Christopher Nolan a creative person though? He has great concentration, often putting subtle little background features in his movies for people to analyse when watching again. He has a vivid imagination, his films are very stylish and original, often having their own views on the world and he is extremely passionate about his work which you can see just by watching them.

None of his movies are generic, even ones focused on established characters just like his Batman movies, I am a massive fan of the comics and those movies are the best representation of the character in film following the basic ideals of the comic book character and making him extremely realistic and making the character relatable. I find Inception to be his most creative piece of work though, this is due to its effective world building and very well explained original story. The main character Dom Cobb (Leonardo Di Caprio) has the ability to plant ideas inside peoples heads by going into their minds, but in order to do so he has to create a fake world that they will believe is real in their minds as if the person knows where they are it could all fall apart. I find this idea along with the visuals used throughout the movie to be one of the most entertaining, original and thought provoking movies I’ve ever watched as depending on how you perceive the movie and its ideas presented and how closely you focus on the movie determines the true ending of the movie, which some people are still debating on nine years after the movie has been released.

As I said before Nolan’s movies are thought provoking and have some pretty deep ideas, Inception focuses on not focusing on the past as it can be a distraction but then realising that it is also the driving force behind why we pursue things. Interstellar focuses on the future of human civilization, over population and pollution and how we as a collective are killing the planet and Memento focuses heavily on revenge and mental disorders which are all displayed in very original and entertaining ways that leave the viewers questioning what they watched years after the release and the true meanings of the film.

I chose Christopher Nolan as he is someone who leaves his movies open to interpretation and as someone studying graphic design I want to have very original designs that could represent different meanings depending on the person viewing the piece. I believe that keeping the viewer involved is a very important part of making your creativity stand out from others, because if it is very generic and bland it wont resonate will people.

About Me

Hey, my name is Tyler Shand, I am 19 years old and I am currently majoring in Graphic Design at Edith Cowan University.

2019 is a fresh start for me as I am studying in a different area to which I was last year. Last year I was studying Architectural Science but realised it wasn’t for me so I transferred to graphic design which I have a lot of interest in.

If I was asked to describe myself I would probably say that I’m very energetic but also conservative at the same time as I’m not great with people I don’t know or share interests with. I’m very competitive, always wanting to win and if I don’t I’m often disappointed and I would like to think I’m friendly.

My interests include:

  • Basketball: I am down at a basketball court 7 days a week, either, playing, training, coaching or working as I am a basketball referee. Basketball is probably my biggest passion and I have been playing since I was 4 years old.
  • Music: Music is something that I heavily rely on. Just like in movies I use music to set my mood. I use it to give me energy before a game, I use it as a calming device and I actually use it often to sleep.
  • Movies: I watch a tonne of movies, if I have time to watch a movie there is a heavy chance i’m going to watch it. I would probably say that i watch about 6-8 movies a week.
