Previous Work Examples

A previous work example that I can look at is my work throughout High School Technical Graphics from years 9 – 12 which had a large focus on creative designs for houses and engineering projects. One of the main things I had to do was create displays to outline the many different areas of the product using Photoshop and Corel Draw. I believe that I can effectively use the knowledge I gained whilst creating these in my Final Projects creation in designing a visual aid using photoshop.

My work in Tech Graphics included the use of programs like the CorelDraw Graphics Suite, Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, TurboFloorPLAN and Photoshop

I also did a year long study of graphic design whilst at High School which outlined the basic techniques used when designing something, the effective use of colour, lighting, consistency, contrast were all discussed and were put to use with the work created. All these techniques are effective for my future work in design.

During my time studying Graphic Design at High school I had to design Magazine Covers, DVD and Video game covers as well as new logos. If you couldn’t tell I really liked video games.

Last year I studied architecture and had to learn all about design processes and determining effective design from ineffective design through the use of the 5 Step Design Process which can be applied directly to any creative design profession.

CREATIVITY AND TECHNOLOGY

Discuss what areas in the article relate to your field of study/future employment and what applications of AR can you envision would be of benefit to you professionally or otherwise in the future? Is there a different contemporary technology that you believe is more relevant to your field? How so? (Downey, S. (2016, October 25). The Gigantic List of Augmented Reality Use Cases. ____________________________________________________________

As shown in the article The Gigantic List of Augmented Reality Cases (Downey, S. 2016) many different areas of study or work could potentially be heavily impacted by the use of AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality). One of those areas is design, or more specifically graphic design, I am currently studying graphic design and VR and AR could provide massive advantages to this profession in the future.

One of the advantages would be that a lot of design work would be able to be created in a virtual world allowing for a closed off and private working space which will “reduce reliance on display devices like TVs, computers, phones, and laptops.” (Downey, S. 2016). This would allow for larger scale designing as well as potentially more efficient working as it is a private working space where you wouldn’t have to worry about the people surrounding you.

Another advantage would be the ability to become a sort of freelancing graphic designer with the use of AR. This is because it AR would allow for design on the fly and then to also practice potential locations for your design as “AR adds digital elements on top of the real world.” (Downey, S. 2016) by giving people the ability to “view 3D models in a physical space” in “new and interactive ways.” (Downey, S. 2016). This would allow for a larger audience to view a design digitally and gain feedback on people’s opinion of the design by recording statements, analysing expressions and body language which would allow for details on whether to move on with the design or not. Same can be done for building plans and construction of large areas. The only negative for this is that it would require AR to be accessible to almost everyone to be effective.

Another potential advantage would be AR and VR helping on the psychological side of design. This would allow for designers to rehearse pitch meetings in front of a virtual crowd allowing them to become more fluid and confident in the design they are trying to display. It could also allow for physical communication over long distances, for instance if both the designer and client have AR are on different sides of the world, they could still physically see the person displaying the design through AR technology providing easy pitches or meetings without the difficulty of travel.

Many programs nowadays are very effective for Graphic Design nowadays, such as Photoshop which allows image editing at an easy and efficient work rate, but through the use of AR graphic design could be elevated due to the easy access on the fly and the ability to display your work practically anywhere as long as people have access to AR technology.

Project Proposal

For my final project for Creativity: Theory, Practice and History I plan to create a series of posters as it relates to the area I am majoring in in graphic design. I will use the space to outline the importance of creativity and the many stages of it that would have been learned throughout the course. I aim for it to be centred towards new students and give them a small introduction to the unit as well as to create an interesting perspective on what they are to be aiming to accomplish in the unit, sort of as an advertisement or selling point to get people interested in the unit. I will aim to create 4 or 5 different posters, each outlining different aspects of creativity or displaying how creators reel people in with their work such as Christopher Nolan (responsible for the Dark Knight Trilogy and Inception), Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction, Django: Unchained) or Stan Lee (Heavily Influential Marvel Comics Writers) who most people know and give them a viewpoint on how their creativity has changed peoples perspectives.
